Chug Contest
The Chug Contest is a simple, high-energy drinking competition that’s a classic at parties, tailgates, Beer Olympics, and backyard gatherings. It’s all about raw speed: who can finish their drink the fastest without spilling too much or stopping.
With buzzers for the finish, it adds a fun, official “race” element — perfect for head-to-head matchups or tournaments. It’s quick, loud, and guaranteed to get the crowd cheering (and laughing at the occasional foam mustache or epic fail).
Equipment Needed
- One plastic party cup (red Solo-style, 16–18 oz) per contestant, or canned/bottled beer.
- Beer (or non-alcoholic alternative like water, soda, or juice) — fill cups about ⅔ to full (8–12 oz per person for a standard chug).
- Two buzzers (or bells, air horns, or a phone app with a loud “buzz” sound) — one for each side or the referee.
- A timer/referee (optional but recommended for tournaments).
- Towels or napkins for cleanup.
Setup
- Line up contestants side-by-side at a table or starting line.
- Fill each cup with the same amount of beverage.
- Place the cups directly in front of each player.
- Have a referee or host ready with the buzzers. Decide on best-of format (e.g., first to win 2 out of 3 rounds).
Teams and Objective
- Can be played 1v1, in small groups, or as a full tournament bracket.
- The goal is simple: be the first person to completely finish your drink and hit your buzzer (or the shared finish buzzer).
- It’s pure speed — no strategy beyond good chugging technique.
Basic Rules and Gameplay
- Ready Position — Everyone stands or sits with hands behind their back or on the table (no touching the cup until “Go!”).
- Start — The host counts down: “3… 2… 1… GO!” or uses a loud signal.
- Chug — Players grab their cup and chug as fast as possible. No pausing, no spilling on purpose.
- Finish — As soon as the cup is empty (bottoms up, no liquid left when inverted), the player slams the cup down and hits their buzzer immediately.
- Winning — The first person to buzz after emptying their cup wins the round. The referee confirms it’s truly empty (a few drops may be forgiven, but major leftovers don’t count).
- Best of Series — Play multiple rounds. First to win the agreed number of rounds (e.g., 2 or 3) wins the contest.
Key Rules:
- Hands must stay off the cup until “Go!”.
- No shotgunning holes in cans unless pre-agreed.
- Spilling a large amount may result in a redo or penalty (extra drink).
- Buzzer must be hit cleanly — first clear buzz wins.
Common House Rules (Discuss Before Starting!)
- No Hands Rule — Some groups require hands behind the back until the start.
- Foam Penalty — If you leave too much foam, you must drink extra.
- Team Relay Chug — Teams take turns chugging one after another (great with buzzers at the end).
- Weighted Cup — Add a small weight or use thicker drinks for fairness.
- Loser Penalty — Loser does a victory lap, chugs a penalty cup, or performs a silly dare.
- Tournament Style — Run brackets with winners advancing; use buzzers for dramatic finishes.
Tips for Playing
- Technique — Tilt the cup high and let gravity help. Take one deep breath before starting, then chug in big gulps without stopping. Practice with water first!
- Breathing — Burp mid-chug if needed — it helps release air and prevents that “full” feeling.
- Strategy — Stay relaxed but explosive at the start. The first 3–4 seconds are critical.
- Hygiene & Safety — Use fresh cups or cans. Provide non-alcoholic versions. Drink responsibly — chugging can hit hard and fast. Know your limits and have water nearby.
