Flip Cup

Brief Overview

Flip Cup is a fast-paced, high-energy team drinking game that’s a staple at parties, tailgates, and college gatherings. Unlike skill-based throwing games, Flip Cup is a relay race that combines quick drinking with hand-eye coordination. The goal is simple: be the first team to finish all your drinks and successfully flip every cup upside down.

It’s often described as more inclusive and chaotic than Beer Pong — perfect for larger groups and non-stop action.

Equipment Needed

  • A long rectangular table (any sturdy table works; longer is better for bigger teams).
  • One plastic party cup (red Solo-style, 16–18 oz) per player.
  • Beer (or non-alcoholic alternative like water, soda, or juice) — fill each cup about ¼ to ⅓ full (roughly 2–4 oz per cup).
  • No balls or extra gear required — just cups and a table!

Setup

  1. Divide players into two equal teams (any even number works; 4–10 players per team is common. With odd numbers, one person can go twice).
  2. Have teams line up along opposite long sides of the table, facing each other.
  3. Place one cup in front of each player, right at the edge of the table.
  4. Fill every cup with the same amount of beverage.

Teams and Objective

  • Played with two teams of any equal size.
  • The objective is to be the first team to have every player drink their cup and successfully flip it so it lands upside down (mouth down, base up).
  • It’s a relay: each player must complete their drink + flip before the next teammate can start.

Basic Rules and Gameplay

  1. Start the game — Both teams’ first players tap their cups together (or on the table) in a “cheers” motion. Count down from 3, and go!
  2. Drink — The first player on each team must completely finish their drink as fast as possible. No sipping — chug it!
  3. Flip the cup — Once the cup is empty, place it right-side up (open end up) at the very edge of the table, with a small part hanging over for leverage. Using only one hand, flick or tap the bottom/rim to flip the cup so it lands upside down (open end down, balanced on its rim).
  4. Next player — As soon as your teammate successfully flips their cup, the next person in line can start drinking. You cannot start until the previous cup is flipped correctly.
  5. Winning — The first team to have all players drink and flip their cups wins the round. Winners often stay on for the next game.

Important rules:

  • Only one hand allowed for flipping (no two-handed “cheats”).
  • If the cup falls off the table or doesn’t land properly, keep trying until it does.
  • Spills or messes are part of the fun — just keep going!

Common House Rules (Agree Before Starting!)

Flip Cup is flexible — discuss these variations upfront:

  • Anchor Rule — The last player (“anchor”) must flip their cup twice in a row to win.
  • No Spills — If you spill while drinking or flipping, you may have to redo your turn or take a penalty drink.
  • Double Cup — Each player has two cups to drink and flip (makes games longer and more intense).
  • Best of Series — Play multiple rounds; first team to win X rounds wins the match.
  • Survivor Mode — Losing team votes off a player each round until one team remains.

Tips for Playing

  • Drinking technique — Practice controlled chugging so you don’t get too full too fast.
  • Flipping technique — Most people find success with a gentle upward flick using your index or middle finger on the bottom edge. Experiment with how much of the cup hangs over the edge — usually ¼ to ½ inch works best. Stay calm and consistent.
  • Strategy — Good drinkers set up strong flippers later in the lineup. Cheer for your teammates — the energy helps!
  • Hygiene & Safety — Rinse cups if needed. Use water or lighter drinks for casual play. Drink responsibly and know your limits — this game moves very quickly!
